Confirming A Person's Identity

Confirming a person’s identity is one of the most basic things you can do when conducting a background check on someone. It can be as simple as opening the phone book and taking a look to see if the personal details you have can be found. If you have an address or telephone number for the individual, check to see if it matches. If the person doesn’t live in your local area or you don’t have a phone book handy you can always use one of the many White Page Searches available on the internet instead.

Sometimes a person’s telephone number may not be immediately available. For instance, they may have an unpublished number or they may have just moved into the area. In this case you should contact directory assistance to see if they have a number available.

Google To The Rescue!

If you haven’t found anything using the methods described above, it is possible to just type the telephone number or address straight into Google and see what it spits out. While this isn’t the most accurate method to use it can be helpful. If, for instance, you entered an address or telephone number that you thought was a residence and it returned a business name instead that may be an indication that you should investigate further.

The Old Standby - Cold Calling

You can dig even deeper if you actually have a telephone number or place of employment using cold-calling. This method isn’t one I like to use if I can help it but it can be an effective means of verifying a person’s identity. If you want to check the telephone number have someone you trust dial the number and ask for the individual or see if they pick up. Try to have a “story” ready in case some one unexpected answers and begins to ask questions. A long lost friend or relative or maybe even a solicitor may be a good choice for this. My point is: be prepared for the target person to answer or someone else such as a wife/husband/child/boyfriend/girlfriend. Remember to keep your cool if it doesn’t go as you expected.

The same method as mentioned above can be used to call someone’s place of employment. Luckily, business phones are often answered by a receptionist that is willing to take a message so often you will never have to actually make contact with the target of your investigation but it lets you find out if the named person actually works there or not.
