Gathering the Basic Information for a Background Check
Before you can get started with your background check or people search you need to gather some basic information on your subject. Ideally, if you can start with a full name, age, address and telephone number you will be off to a good start. Obviously, if you can get other information such as a social security number, place of employment, or other similar personal information, that can save you some time when doing your research.
Ask the Person Themselves
For those people that are just getting started in a relationship or meeting people over the internet it is a good idea to try and get this information as soon as possible so you can do a basic background check. Don’t be too pushy trying to get this data from someone you just met! Most people will freely give this information early on in a casual conversation without being prodded for it. Take a mental note of it when they do give details. If their details keep changing or they are hesitant to provide them this could be a sign of deception (but not always!!) and you should probably scrutinize their background more closely!
Try a White Pages Search
If you only have a couple of pieces of information to start your investigation with or have very little information to go on, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get started is to try a White Pages Search. A white pages search will usually let you start with only bits of information. You can then use the information returned to help narrow your search down until you find the details you’re looking for. Using this method it's possible to have all the basic information you need such as a name, address, and telephone number in just a few minutes.
Missing Critical Information? Use A Pay Service
Keep in mind that there are tons of public records available on the internet today but there is no single place you can go to find all the information you seek. The more “identifiable information” you have on the person before you start the better. If you're not interested in looking up this information yourself, there are pay services such as InfoRegistry that will provide quick, easy access to the information all in one place.
Be Thorough - Try Not To Miss Anything
When conducting a background check, information such as criminal records, motor vehicle records, and vital records may be found at both the state and local levels. For instance, you will probably need to know the city, state, and/or county the person was living in when any criminal offense took place in order to find records that pertain to that incident. If there are any recent criminal actions, only the local city/county records may be available as some counties are slow transmitting their data to the state level. Be especially thorough when looking for criminal records.
