Social Security Number Trace

A social security trace is one of the most important searches you can run on a person. Unfortunately, this type of search can only be run by information professionals so it will probably cost you something to have this type of search ran. Some websites such as InfoRegistry will allow you to do a search on social security numbers if you also have a last name available.

The social security trace will return all current and reported addresses for an individual for the past 7 to 10 years based on what is found in the credit bureau records. Each line of the report will generally contain a name, address, the date the information was entered into the credit report, and the county.

For example a search using Jane Doe’s social security number may return:

Jane A. Doe

CA-Jane A. Doe 1234 First Street Nashville, TN 37202 10/2007 Davidson
FA-Jane A. Doe 327 Jackson Lane Nashville, TN 37202 05/2006 Davidson
FA-Jane A. Doe 567 Lawrence St. Brentwood, TN 37392 02/2003 Williamson
FA-Jane A. Holt 232 West Ave. Toledo, OH 43601 10/1998 Lucas

FN-Jane A. Holt SSN Issued: 1985;OH

You may also notice the abbreviations CA, FA, and FN listed above. CA stands for current address, FA stands for former address, and FN stands for former name.

If you are looking for criminal records, you now have all of the states and counties that would need to be searched. In our example report, we also had a couple of different names listed for the social security number. All the names listed would need to be searched separately if looking for criminal records, but in this case it is just an indication that our female subject has gotten married.

Any other name discrepancies in the report would need to be investigated further and could possibly indicate a problem such as identity theft for instance.
