Checking Voter
Registration Records
Voter registration records can potentially offer a plethora of information that is hard to find anywhere else. Many PI’s consider voter registration records as the single most important information source for background checks.
Voter Registration Records Are Public Records
Voter registration records are publicly available at your local county clerk’s office but many counties may also offer internet access to them. You can try this free public record search to see what is available for your area. Internet access can be hit and miss however, as the rollout to all digital records has been slow in some areas. So if you can’t find them on the internet the only way to get them is to call or visit the county clerk’s office yourself. The records are public information so you shouldn’t have any problems getting access to them. If they ask what you want them for just tell them you want to check the signature.
What's In Your Voter Registration Record?
Most voter registration cards will have at least a full name, a current or very recent address, possibly past addresses, age or the date of birth, and a signature. If you’re lucky, you may also find a social security number, which in most cases is optional, but many people enter it anyway. This is one of very few publicly available places to find a social security number.
So what if your subject doesn’t have a voter registration card? You can still look for any relatives and their corresponding information as this may be helpful to you if you need to dig deeper or hire a private investigator to look into a subject’s background.
As mentioned previously in Confirming a Person’s Identity, the cold-calling technique can also be used to contact a relative in hopes that they may give up some pertinent information about your subject.
